10 ways to identify quality window products and companies:

1. Invest in a vinyl window that has been CSA certified and Energy Star approved. They may cost a little bit more, but you’ll get your money back quickly via increased energy efficiency.
2. Purchase vinyl windows that come standard with warm-edge spacer systems. Some companies offer them as an option, but how will you know what you’ve actually received, after the fact?
3. The air space between the two panes of glass should be greater than ½”, but less than 7/8”, for optimal performance.
4. Make sure that all of the vinyl window frames and sashes are fusion welded (not mechanically fastened, or screwed together). Vinyl doesn’t hold screws very well.
5. Sashes should all be interlocking. You can visually check for this when looking at the window.
6. Vital parts such as the handle pulls need to be a molded part of the window and not an add-on or snap-in piece. If they’re not, they could break off and would be very difficult to repair.
7. Look for vinyl windows with a “tilt-in” feature. “Lift out” windows can sometimes be slightly more energy efficient, but the sashes can also be very heavy and difficult to remove and re-install when cleaning.
8. Make sure that the window is made of 100% virgin vinyl material and not reground (or recycled) vinyl. The latter can be brittle and won’t last nearly as long.
9. Whenever possible, buy from the manufacturer. This way, you’ll avoid the finger-pointing that invariably occurs when a problem arises and each party tries to absolve itself from responsibility.
10. Choose a company that’s been in business for at least 10 years, with a solid reputation and a history of standing behind its customers. Remember, a warranty is only as good as the company behind it.
